Step 2: Create Assignments and Modules

With this article we go over the steps to create Assignments or Modules within a Canvas course.

Select File with the External Tool Option

To add an Assignment within the Canvas course using the IllumiDesk application, select the External Tool option in the Submission Type drop down:

Then, click on the Find button to launch the file picker modal to select the file you wish to add as an entry point to your assignment:

File Visibility Note

If the assignment was defined with the AutoGrader, then the grader will not see the Jupyter Notebook files listed in folders that are not within the release folder. This is to avoid confusion when selecting files that are prepared with the AutoGrader. View the AutoGrader section for more information on how to set up Jupyter Notebook files with AutoGrading enabled.

Once you have saved and published your assignment your users can access the assignment files with their own Jupyter Notebook instances with the click of a button!

Adding an assignment or file that functions as an entry point that is associated to a Module follows almost exactly the same procedure as adding an assignment. You can either add a previously defined assignment to a course module, or like assignments, add a Jupyter Notebook file to the module with the External Tool file picker:

Student Projects, Jupyter Notebook Instances, and LTI

IllumiDesk leverages the LTI interface and therefore uses the information exchanged via LTI to create accounts, projects, and workspace instances automatically. There is no need to manually synchronize user data between your Canvas instance and IllumiDesk.
